Organizational Change Toxic Culture

Welcome everyone, to our website on Toxic Culture.
This culture is a victim of phenomena known by many names, most commonly lateral violence, lateral hostility, horizontal violence, bullying, nurse against nurse and the old favourite nurses eating their young. Interestingly, this culture is more prevalent and accepted and it is a predictor of the potential success (or more commonly, failure) of attempts at change initiatives. It is suggested that most nurses have experienced workplace violence in their career at one time or another.
One of the most effective methods to initiate a trajectory away from toxicity and toward amicability is acknowledgement of its existence.  But what exactly is considered violence or bullying? Is simply ignoring a person you do not like bullying? What about setting that newly graduated nurse straight on how things are done on your unit? What about discussing a lazy, unmotivated nurse with your co workers? All of these things and many more are bullying behaviours that flourish in a toxic environment.

That’s where we come in!
